OVERVIEW:

Although the South African Revenue Service (SARS) collected R700m more in taxes than was announced in the February 2014 budget (R889.7bn in total was collected from taxes for the 2013-14 tax year), this additional revenue will not be going into improving SARS’s systems or to increase staff capacity, but will be used by the government to consolidate the fiscal position by reducing the need for borrowing. Thus from an operational perspective, the ordinary taxpayer will presumably be dealing with the same frustrations as before. To ensure that you are up to date with all latest operational news and updates from SARS and events Professor Sharon Smulders, Head of Tax Technical Policy and Research, and her technical team will host the SAIT’s fourth SARS operational webinar on Tuesday the 23rd April 2014 from 15h00 to 17h00.

PRESENTER:

Professor Sharon Smulders - PhD Tax, Hons B.Com (Accounting), M.Com (Taxation), CA(SA), MTP(SA)

Sharon is the Head of Tax Technical & Research at the SA Institute of Tax Practitioners. She will primarily be responsible to liaise with SARS, National Treasury, Parliament and international organisations on tax policy matters. In addition, Sharon also received the SAIT Chair and visiting professor in taxation at the University of the Western Cape.

Prior to joining SAIT, Sharon was an associate professor in taxation with the University of Pretoria where she lectured taxation on both under-graduate and post-graduate levels. Amongst others, she has presented workshops to SARS, ACCA, KPMG and BDO. She has also assisted the World Bank in 2006-2007 and SARS in 2011-2012 with quantitative research on the tax compliance burden for small businesses. Her research with the World Bank led to tax legislation amendments in 2008. Prior to joining academia, she was a manager in the taxation department of Deloitte in Pretoria. She has a very keen interest in small business taxation which developed into her masters and doctoral studies. She has also published accredited research articles on this topic and presented her research findings at various international and national conferences

WHY REGISTER WITH SAIT?

Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER

The Act requires that a minimum academic and practical requirments be set to register with a controlling body. Click here for the minimum requirements of SAIT.
