Introduction

A distinguishing mark of the tax profession is its acceptance of responsibility to act in the public interest. To this end the tax professional is not exclusively in service to satisfy client needs, but rather serves a higher purpose.

This compulsory training series is designed to empower the tax professional in developing practical applied knowledge of the standards, rules and regulations expected of and governing the tax profession. The training series will also illustrate its practical application in daily practice and/or employment.



Content

This training series will be presented online (webinar), and will consist of the following modules:

Module 1

Ethical obligations of Tax Professionals. Referencing the Code of Professional Conduct in Relation to Taxation and standards by-laws as a basis, the elements and principles of ethics applicable to the tax professional will be explained and expanded upon, using practical examples of actual disciplinary cases against tax professionals, where possible.

Module 2:

This module will consider ethics in general with specific reference to the importance ethics and integrity in the lifecycle of a tax professional. The module will also provide members with practical guidance on how to recognise and deal with ethical issues.

Jan Dijkman BA
LLB, LLM, H Dip Tax, Adv Dip Labour Law, Certified Ethics Officer

Jan is the former the Project Director: Ethics and Discipline for the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants for over 16 years.

Jan is now an independent legal and ethics consultant, focusing on business and professional ethics, as well as corporate governance. Over the years, he has conducted many training sessions on Ethics, particularly professional ethics as it relates to the Accountancy profession.

He also lectures at the University of Johannesburg / IoD's diploma in corporate governance, lecturing on directors' responsibilities in terms of the Companies Act, the common law and the King Code on Corporate Governance III.

 
Compulsory TaxCPD Policy

This member notice serves to remind members of the 5 units of verifiable output Ethics and Standards CPD obligation required of members under the SAIT CPD Policy in order to retain professional membership.

 
CPD

5 hours of verifiable output TaxCPD in Ethics & Standards will be awarded and issued provided members attended both modules. In addition to attendance, members are also required to successfully complete the required CPD verifiable questionnaires.

WHY REGISTER WITH SAIT?

Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER

The Act requires that a minimum academic and practical requirments be set to register with a controlling body. Click here for the minimum requirements of SAIT.
