Overview

Tax law is arguably one of the most dynamic and complex fields of law one can practice in. Due to legislative amendments and case law, it is an ever changing environment.

Staying abreast of changes and developments in tax law is an absolute requirement for any person providing tax or tax-related advice. Time, however, does not always permit this level of dedication.

Presenter

Jerry Botha is the managing partner of Tax Consulting South Africa, a niche tax consultancy specialising in complex South African and international tax matters. The firm is made up of 45 professionals including attorneys, chartered accountants, master tax practitioners and master reward specialists. Tax Consulting’s main client base includes large South African and multi-national companies. Whilst considered a medium-sized tax consultancy, the company has launched the highest number of Tax Board and Tax Court applications in 2016/17 and without any adverse decisions against their clients. Botha considers his firm’s approach as conservative yet innovative, with a good balance between technical competence and practical executability.

Botha is a certified payroll practitioner and tax practitioner. He is also a certified financial planner and holds his own Financial Services Board licence which assists him in providing holistic advice. Due to his level of expertise, he serves on the Financial Planning Institute’s tax advisory committee. As a master reward practitioner, he also serves as the executive of the South African Reward Association (SARA) and chairs the SARA Employee Benefit Committee. Previously, Botha headed-up personal taxes at KPMG, was an associate director at Deloitte and acted as tax chair for the Financial Planning Institute.

Botha enjoys the highly technical but also always practical approach to tax matters, and engages with SARS regularly on a decision-making level. He has made extensive contributions to the legislative process in South Africa, both at National Treasury and Parliament Portfolio Committee level. His contributions relate to retirement reform, medical aid, expatriate housing, travel allowances, etc., and have secured what is considered industry-changing SARS Published Rulings on international share schemes, ordinarily residency testing and international pension funds.

He is a well-known speaker and considers himself an everyday student of tax, as the modern tax practitioner learns something new almost every day.

The monthly webinar is presented by the Tax Consulting team under the lead of Botha. This ensures that technical developments are well covered by a range of experts, each with niche expertise including tax legal developments, case law and tax administrative law issues; accounting aspects; tax planning; as well as compliance aspects of the latest tax developments.

    • If the cancellation occurs more than 4 working days prior to the event no cancellation fee will be charged.
    • If the cancellation occurs less than 4 working days prior to the event a 100% cancellation fee will apply.
  • Delegates who book and fail to attend will be liable for the full event fee.
  • SAIT's liability in the case of an event being cancelled will be limited to a refund or credit of the event fee.

WHY REGISTER WITH SAIT?

Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.
