Today marks 90 days since the former Commissioner of Sars, Oupa Magashula, resigned following the outcome of an investigation into allegations that the commissioner interfered in staff recruitment processes.
The inquiry found that the Commissioner placed the reputation and credibility of the revenue service at risk by his conduct and that he lied to the Minister about his communication with a prospective employee
Following Magashula's resignation, Ivan Pillay, former deputy-commissioner of SARS, was appointed Acting Commissioner.
Dr Beric Croome, tax executive at Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs, says in terms of the Sars Act, the Minister can either extend Pillay's term for another 90 days or appoint someone else as Acting Commissioner.
