The Tax Review Committee has started three further investigations into South Africa’s tax system, which specifically focus on value-added tax, mining taxes and wealth taxes.
The Committee was appointed by finance minister Pravin Gordhan in July last year and is headed by Judge Dennis Davis. It was tasked with a comprehensive review of the country’s tax system, which includes an analysis of its tax base and tax mix.
Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.
