ANNET OGUTTU

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Non-Executive Director / President

Annet Oguttu is a professor in Tax Law at Unisa; where she lectures International Tax Law and Income Tax Law. She serves on the Davis Tax Committee as also a Commissioner at the SA Law Reform Commission. She is a National Research Foundation rated researcher. Annet is an advocate of the High Court in Lesotho. She has won the SA DST 2012 "Distinguished Women in Science Award: Social Sciences and Humanities" (second runner up); the 2009 University of Michigan Presidential Scholars Award and UNISA's 2011 Women of the Year Award as well as UNISA's 2010 Top Performer Award

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Annet holds an LLD with a focus on International Tax Law as well as an LLM with specialisation in Tax law, both from UNISA. She obtained an HDip in International Tax Law from UJ; LLB from Makerere University in Uganda and Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre Makerere.

LUCIA HLONGWANE

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Non-Executive Director / President

Lucia Hlongwane is the Africa Tax Leader at EY and an admitted advocate of the High Court of South Africa. She is a well-regarded tax professional and has emerged as a new generation thought leader within the tax community. Her expertise include managing tax risk, cross-border restructuring and refinancing, tax planning and transfer pricing. She previously served as Head of Tax at Barclays Africa.






ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Lucia holds a BProc and an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand; an LLM in Taxation from the University of Pretoria; a Mining Taxation Diploma from Unisa and an Insolvency Law Diploma from AIPSA. She also completed a Wits Business School Program in Executive Leadership Development.

NARA MONKAM

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Independent Director

Nara Monkam is the Director of Research at the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), she also serves on the Davis Tax Committee. Previously Nara was the Chief Director of the African Tax Institute, which is associated with the University of Pretoria.










ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Nara obtained a PhD in Economics (Public Finance) from Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University in the United States. Nara holds a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Economics from the University of Namur in Belgium.

ANDREW CARLSSON

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Independent Director

Andrew is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers where he has served for thirty years. Andrew is also the CEO of the Chartered Institute of Tourism and Hospitality as well as the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and Accountants. He is the independent non-executive director of the SAIT board. He has a passion for quality assurance in education and training.

ERNIE LAI KING

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Independent Director

Ernie Lai King is Head of the Johannesburg tax department and Asia Practice Group at Hogan Lovells, a Tier 1 Top 10 international law firm. Ernie has 33 years of experience during which time he has specialised in mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolution, opinions, structured finance and international tax. He was appointed in 2011 as a member of the Income Tax Special Court of Appeal (a State President appointment).






ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Ernie holds a Masters degree in Business Leadership and a BCom (Hons) from Unisa. He has also obtained an HDip in Tax Law and a BSc degree from the University of Witwatersrand.

NICOLAAS VAN WYK

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Independent Director

Nicolaas van Wyk is the CEO of the South African Institute of Business Accountants. In 2010 he joined the South African Accounting Academy as Shareholder and Director. During the initial stages of the Companies Act reform, Nicolaas acted as the coordinator for the Department of Trade and Industry Working Group on Company Formation.








ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Nicolaas obtained his MBA from GIBS. He also holds a BCom and BCom Honours degree in Accounting which he received from the University of Pretoria.

KABELO MALAPELA

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Non-Executive Director

Kabelo Malapela is a Partner in the Africa Tax Practice of EY based Johannesburg. She specialises in corporate tax in the financial services sector. As the Tax Talent Leader for Africa, she is a member of the Africa tax leadership team.






ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Kabelo is a Chartered Accountant (SA) and holds a HDip in Tax Law from the University of Johannesburg.

SEELAN MUTHAYAN

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Non-Executive Director

Seelan Muthayan is the VAT Director at BDO in Johannesburg. He is also an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. Seelan has over 20 years of legal and tax experience in both the government and the private sector.







ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Seelan holds a BProc and LLB degree from the University of Port Elizabeth and LLM in Tax Law from Unisa.

STIAAN KLUE

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Non-Executive Director

Stiaan is the founder and former Chief Executive of SAIT. He is currently the Chairperson of the Advisory Board and Head of the Institute's Tax Faculty. Prior to establishing SAIT, Stiaan worked in both academia and the corporate world. Stiaan serves on the Ministry for Small Business and Development's task team, which has been tasked with presenting a master plan for small business development in South Africa.


ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Stiaan completed his Charted Accountancy Studies at NWU Potchefstroom. He also completed his Masters degree in Taxation (Cum Laude) from NWU, where he finished top of his class.

KEITH ENGEL

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Executive Director

Keith Engel is the CEO of SAIT. As CEO, he is heavily engaged in tax at a policy, legislative and interpretative level by liaising with, among others, National Treasury, Parliament, SARS, the Davis Tax Committee and the private sector. Keith is an honorary adjunct professor at the University of Cape Town, North Western University and Rhodes University, and he has lectured at South African and international universities. Keith is well known for his leading roles in the formulation of tax legislation at the National Treasury from 2000 to 2013.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Keith obtained his Masters of Laws of Taxation at Georgetown Law, and holds a professional doctorate (J.D) from Georgetown Law.

MICHELLE LANDMAN

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Executive Director

Michelle Landman has been employed with SAIT for the past 5 years and currently holds the positions Chief Operating Officer and Financial Director. Michelle completed her SAICA articles in 2011 and was in the Customer Service department at Santam Limited for 7 years prior to completing her articles.




ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Michelle holds a BCom Accounting degree from the University of Johannesburg. She also obtained a BCom degree in Industrial Psychology from the same university.
   

WHY REGISTER WITH SAIT?

Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER

The Act requires that a minimum academic and practical requirments be set to register with a controlling body. Click here for the minimum requirements of SAIT.
