Awareness of Carbon Tax Low

Despite estimates that the impending carbon tax could add an additional tax burden of up to R20bn to business overall, awareness levels amongst executives are low.

According to the 2013 Deloitte CFO survey, only 52% of respondents are aware of the tax, which will be levied on carbon dioxide emissions from January 1, 2015 onwards.

Of the CFOs who are aware of the tax, almost all believe it will impact their business, and over 30% expect the effect to be significant.

Rodger George, director: consulting at Deloitte, says companies with a low carbon footprint may underestimate the effect a carbon tax would have on their business.

Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.
