SARS sent an email to practitioners stating that they either need to re-register, are not registered or are inactive as a tax practitioner. It appears that these emails were sent out before all of the RCB’s had uploaded all of their information. To ensure that you are a registered tax practitioner with SARS and SAIT, please ensure that your personal information, specifically your:

  • Name/s and surname 
  • ID number
  • Cell number
  • Tax reference number

is exactly the same on both SAIT and SARS’ systems. SARS will then inform you that you can continue to practice as a tax practitioner.

Regarding your tax practitioner number, it must be noted that SARS recently converted the Tax Practitioner Number from the old alphanumeric format to a new numeric format. This primarily was done for easier access and accuracy to SARS interactive systems.

  • Practitioners who were originally assigned an alphanumeric number, will be assigned a new numeric number with the re-registration process.  Those practitioners receiving a new numeric number, will still be able to use either format until further notice to allow time for communications with their clients and the changing of stationery.
  • Practitioners who were originally assigned a numeric number, their practitioner number will remain unchanged with the re-registration process.

Taxpayer (individual) client went in to update his personal banking particulars. Told by SARS that "he has seven profiles". How is that possible - he has never personally lodged a tax return! Try 11 hours over two days to get these profiles "merged".

I assume that the alpha prefix on the registration number does not include the "PR" and then my original number will still stand?I have also re-registered simply because SAIT registration did not include my ID no. I assume it is not necessary to await any confirmation that all is fine from SARS and SAIT's point of view?

Thanks Judith - I had to do that because my personal income tax was on a separate efiling profile to all the clients. Now I only one profile.

You are going to enjoy this one: Even after verifying all my personal details TWICE and receiving two sms's advising me of this.... I cannot access my own private tax profile on eFiling to get a TCC as .... "Your client's representative has to come into SARS in person with ID and supporting letters of authority to verify & activate her profile" ! You can imagine the discussion that ensued ..... Case Ref available Outcome/: I must wait 48 hours to see if SARS has updated their data base. This is just too ridiculous for words!!!

Tax Practitioners need to make sure that they only have one ID number profile at SARS. In many cases we have multiply ID number profiles at SARS and these profiles do not have our tax number in these profiles. The Tax Practitioner needs to go to SARS and get SARS to merge all their ID numbers so that there is only one ID number profile as SARS. Once this has been done, it appears that the merge between SARS and SAIT is then successful.



Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.
