We can answer your tax queries

The constant changes in legislation leads to uncertainty among tax professionals in South Africa. An opinion that could have been written in no more than ten pages by a single person a decade ago now can be anything of up to 100 pages long. Coupled with modernisation and the speed at which transactions take place, it is no surprise that a lot of grey areas are encountered by tax professionals on a daily.

This is where Technical Department comes in. One of our most important functions is to provide members with guidance on any tax related query that comes to mind. The Technical Department works according to a service level agreement of 72 business hours in answering queries and receives approximately 100 queries per week. 

We provide guidance on a number of different queries, including technical, operational, efiling, SARS specific enquiries or escalations. 

We are your voice

Not only do we assist you with queries that you might have but we also act as your voice in public forums relating to tax in this country. SARS is a world-class revenue authority and relies heavily on input from external stakeholders to ensure that it is functioning properly.

In this regard, the various SARS branch offices across the country organise SARS operational meetings on a quarterly basis to provide Recognised Controlling Bodies with the opportunity to escalate and communicate their members’ concerns relating to modernisation and the service delivery of SARS. The SAIT Technical Department attends between 20 and 30 SARS operational meetings per year. These meetings proved to be highly effective and SARS takes action on the items raised during these platforms.

Effecting policy formation and implementation 

One of the SAIT’s missions is to protect the public interest by participating in policy formulation and implementation. Public participation in the legislative process also forms one of the corner stones of a modern day democracy and the Technical Department plays an important role in representing its members in this regard. On a yearly basis, the Technical Department compiles numerous submissions to and lobbies with National Treasury, SARS and the Standing Committee of Finance to protect the public’s interest that may be in jeopardy due to proposed legislation being passed. Keeping the communication channels open

The Technical Department plays an important role in ensuring that the Institute’s members are kept up to date with the latest tax changes by compiling and distributing the TaxTalk Professional newsletter every Thursday. A new exciting development is the TaxTalk Business newsletter that is distributed to all members on the last Monday of every month. This newsletter forms a niche marketing tool to members in that they can, in less than five minutes, customise the newsletter with their own company logo and tax articles of their choice before distributing it to their customers. I sent in a notice of objection regarding a taxpayer who went into sars office to submit supporting documents, the consultant amended his tax return, but it was done incorrectly, deductions were not included, med aid tax credits, travel expenses, etc, resulting in an assessment of R70 000 due to sars, I submitted the notice of objection on 16Oct14 but no reply yet, tax no for this client 1048101834, ID 4907215112006, Willem Adriaan Smit, Please assist !

It is true tax is becoming complicated and your availability is much appreciated. I am hoping we do not have to pay extra for this.

Is there any additional charges to asking assistance with a tax related query, other than the membership fee? I can see how giving initial direction with a tax query can be great help i.e. what needs to be considered?

I do agree that the tax talk is a big help to us and beneficial



Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.
