Former SARS official arrested for R5-million VAT fraud

A chartered accountant and former SARS employee was arrested for alleged VAT fraud of more than R5-million at her work-place in Centurion on Friday, 27 November 2015.  SARS’ risk engines assisted in identifying the unusual activity which was further examined by SARS investigators using 3rd party verification.

Section 240A of the Tax Administration Act, 2011 (as amended) requires that all tax practitioners register with a recognized controlling body before 1 July 2013. It is a criminal offense to not register with both a recognized controlling body and SARS.
